The Ten Lesser Titans — Deep dive
Gravity — the pull between all things.
Of the Ten Lesser Titans, Gravity is the cleanest test case for the Ascension Theory. The texts say a mortal reached Diamond rank by mastering Earth essence so completely that they transcended into mass itself. Whether Gravity ever had consciousness — whether any Lesser Titan ever did — remains the central cosmological argument the Arcane Assembly cannot resolve.
Identity
- Domain
- Weight · attraction · celestial motion
- Nature
- Patient, inexorable, binding
- Influence
- The pull between all things — falling stones, orbiting bodies, the planet itself
- Manifestation
- Sensed in sudden weightlessness or crushing pressure
- Element pairing
- Earth (per Ascension Theory)
- Paired Lesser Titan
- Stillness — both impose restriction and anchor against change
- Vault-favoured origin
- Ascension Theory — the first Diamond-ranker to ascend by mastering Earth essence enough to control mass itself
- Current status
- Silent. Influence continues without interruption. Gravity still pulls.
Origin theories
Three competing theories account for every Lesser Titan. Only one (Ascension) can be tested, and even that test would require producing a new ascension — something nobody has accomplished since the True Silence.
Ascension Theory (favoured)
A mortal — almost certainly the first — reached Diamond rank and refused to stop. By mastering Earth essence to its furthest extent, they transcended into the law of mass itself. The Ten Who Walked Beyond texts cite Gravity by name.
Fragment Theory
A piece of Valdris's consciousness split off during the chaos of the Sealing and bound itself to the principle of mass. The element pairing supports this; the timing (Gravity was already venerated before the Sealing) does not.
Primordial Theory
Predated the Great Five entirely. An early attempt at consciousness by raw Earth essence, simply overshadowed when Valdris grew stronger. Held by a small but stubborn Arcane Assembly minority.
Pair partner — Stillness
Gravity and Stillness are paired. Both impose restriction against change — Gravity by pulling everything toward centres of mass, Stillness by halting motion at any arbitrary point. The Stonewill family's emotional-control doctrine borrows directly from this pairing: cultivate the Gravity-Stillness axis and you become harder to move, inside and out.
The pairing is asymmetric. Gravity acts on everything unconditionally; Stillness must be invoked. Most practitioners come to one through the other.
Modern signs (Year 8,955)
- Gravity continues to function. The Arcane Assembly has measured no detectable variation in any of the past two thousand years.
- No cult of Gravity is documented anywhere on the continent — among the Lesser Titans, perhaps the most reluctantly worshipped.
- Diamond-rank Earth cultivators report 'reaching toward' something during their final breakthroughs. Whether this is Gravity's residual presence or simply the cultivation pathway is debated.
- No new Diamond-rank ascensions have been confirmed since the True Silence. The Ascension Theory's first prediction (more ascensions) has not been observed.
Modern theology
Arcane Assembly — Ascension Orthodoxy
Ascension Theory is the working consensus. Gravity is the cleanest test case — Earth-essence ascension is the most theoretically tractable path, and the Diamond-rank breakthrough mechanics line up.
Stone Brotherhood — Earth Wisdom
Gravity is part of Valdris's domain, not a separate consciousness. The pull of the mountain and the pull of the world are the same pull, expressed at different scales. Held quietly; rarely articulated to outsiders.
Silent Materialism
Gravity is a natural force with no consciousness behind it. The 'Lesser Titans' framework is a cultural artefact, not a cosmological claim. Held by a small but vocal Republic faction.
