The Northern Wastes — void corruption walks openly, and the Rendrown hold the line by themselves.
Northern mountains and frozen tundra, with volcanic activity beneath the ice. Two million Rendrown across thirty clans live here in fortified mountain holds, fighting void-corrupted Vilewalker-orc monsters every season and the cold every winter. The Fire Peaks are sacred; the Corruption Wastes are conceded; one or more Voidstones are rumoured hidden somewhere inside the corrupted zones. Imperial expeditions have rarely returned from the far side of the Barrier Range.

Defining features
The Fire Peaks
Active volcanoes sacred to the Rendrown. Religious significance — fire-worship and ancestor veneration meet here. Many clan strongholds are built into geothermally heated mountainsides. The largest peak is the destination of the annual Fire Peak Pilgrimage; clan chiefs renew alliances at its summit and the High Blood Mage's confirmation ritual takes place there.
The Corruption Wastes
Areas fully consumed by void manifestations. Reality distortions cause madness in unprotected observers. Shadow beasts hunt anything alive. One or more Voidstones are believed hidden inside; the Rendrown have not searched and the Dark Elves cannot reach without consequences neither party will accept. The Corruption Wastes have expanded slowly across two centuries — by some measurements.
Clan Holds
Fortified settlements built into mountainsides. Each clan independent; alliances are informal and seasonal. The largest hold (Borgakh's clan) accommodates roughly twelve thousand Rendrown; the smallest active holds barely two hundred. Smaller holds are routinely lost to void incursion and re-established on different mountainsides.
The Barrier Range
The mountains protecting Rendrown from southern invasion. Empire expeditions have rarely returned from the far side — the Range is steep, weather-hostile, and patrolled by both Rendrown scouts and void-corrupted creatures who consider Imperial soldiers competitive prey. The Range is also the unofficial border between Rendrown territory and the Imperial Heartland.
The Geothermal Vents
Hot springs and steam vents scattered across the volcanic territory. Provide essential winter warmth and (in some areas) usable cultivation atmospheres. Rendrown bath houses are typically built atop vents; the smallest holds occasionally consist of a single insulated structure over a single warm vent.
The Burned Forests (regional fragment)
Portions of the cross-regional Burned Forests reach into the southern Rendrown territory. The trees burn with cold flames that never consume them — ancient Titan-battle aftermath. The Rendrown consider them sacred; pilgrims sometimes visit; the cold flames respond to fire essence at unusual ratios.
Major settlements
Bloodfist Hold (Borgakh's clan, ~12,000)
The largest Rendrown settlement. Built into a geothermally heated mountainside in the central Northern Wastes; partially underground. Chief Borgakh Bloodfist's seat; the de facto location for Blood Council convenings since his clan's rise. Reportedly hosts the secret Republic envoy meetings the isolationist consensus officially does not know about.
Urzoga's Vault (High Blood Mage's seat, ~3,000)
Smaller fortified settlement built around the High Blood Mage's training facility. Apprentice Blood Mages live here for their training years; the Pain Crystal storage vaults are kept inside. Heavily warded; the surrounding kilometre of mountainside is dangerous to walk for non-Rendrown.
Fire Peak Camp (seasonal, ~500–8,000)
Temporary gathering camp at the base of the Fire Peak. Population swells during the annual Fire Peak Pilgrimage to several thousand; otherwise houses the small permanent caretaker population. The Pilgrimage's neutral-ground status extends to the entire camp during the gathering.
Frostwall (Barrier Range outpost, ~2,000)
Largest of the Barrier Range outposts facing the Imperial Heartland. Watch-post and trade-post functions; Imperial-Rendrown contact (such as it is) happens here. The outpost's chief is appointed by the Blood Council rather than inherited within a clan — one of the few cross-clan posts in the Rendrown structure.
Historical timeline
Pre-Sealing
The Northern Wastes are the borderlands between Ignathar's expansion territory and Aerithon's storm-controlled zones. Volcanic activity is high. Vilewalkers contest the area with the early orcs; mixing accidents begin here.
Years 1,000–4,500 — The exile era
Ignathar's last orc-champion exiles the proto-Rendrown to the Northern Wastes after the orcish mixing decision. The Rendrown develop blood magic in isolation across this period. The Fire Peak becomes their sacred centre; the Pilgrimage tradition dates to roughly Year 3,500.
Years 4,500–7,000 — The Champion Era under abandonment
Ignathar barely acknowledges the Rendrown across this period. The Rendrown's blood-magic tradition matures; the clan-based political structure stabilises; the void-corrupted monster pressure becomes the constant threat that defines northern life.
Year 7,000 — The True Silence
Ignathar falls silent. Rendrown blood magic, which never relied on his voice, continues unaffected. The relative competitive advantage compounds; the Rendrown are, paradoxically, the least disrupted population on the continent.
Years 7,000–8,500 — The northern centuries
Constant low-grade war with void-corrupted monsters. Clan cohesion strengthens through shared adversity. The Blood Council formalises its defensive coordination role.
Year 8,500–present — External re-contact
Republic envoys begin cautious overtures. Imperial intelligence monitors. The internal isolation-versus-alliance debate intensifies. The Corruption Wastes may be slowly expanding; the void-corrupted monster pressure does not abate.
Strategic borders
Southern border — Barrier Range and the Imperial Heartland
The Range is the unofficial border. Imperial expeditions rarely return; Rendrown southern scouts know the Range better than any opponent could. Direct Empire-Rendrown contact is rare and tends to be intelligence-flavoured.
Eastern border — the Northern Frost Sea
Frozen most of the year. Connects to (theoretically) the eastern continental margin and the Republic's northern maritime reach. Smugglers occasionally cross; the Rendrown maritime presence is nonexistent; the Frost Sea is also where void corruption sometimes breaks through the ice surface.
Western border — open tundra and the Northern Frost Sea coast
Effectively uncontested. The terrain is hostile to all sustained operations. Some scattered Rendrown clans operate at the western extremes; the Corruption Wastes touch this area.
Northern border — unmapped
Beyond the known Rendrown range. No expedition has returned from far enough north to establish a definitive boundary; ancient Titan-era records suggest land continues but provide no detail.
Inside — the Corruption Wastes
The internal frontier. The Rendrown contain the Corruption Wastes rather than control them; the front moves slowly and unpredictably; the Blood Council's defensive coordination role exists primarily for this front.
Travel & access
- · Rendrown roads do not exist in the formal sense. Inter-hold travel is by foot, mountain pony, or essence-augmented run; routes shift with seasonal weather and void-corruption pressure.
- · The Fire Peak Pilgrimage routes are well-marked and seasonally maintained. Outside the Pilgrimage window, the routes are not maintained and become genuinely dangerous.
- · Geothermal vent stops are the standard winter shelters. Knowing the vent locations is critical to northern survival; Rendrown children learn them young.
- · Crossing the Barrier Range into the Imperial Heartland is technically open but practically self-regulated by terrain difficulty and patrol coverage. Most cross-border movement is small-group smuggling or formal diplomatic contact.
- · The Corruption Wastes are not traversed. Border patrols circle them; expeditions into them have a poor return rate.
Current challenges (Year 8,955)
Void-corruption pressure
Vilewalker-orc monster strains in the northern wastes are persistent. The Rendrown win every local engagement but cannot reduce the source population; the war is structural rather than winnable. Blood-mage casualties from corruption exposure are the main long-term cost.
Isolation versus alliance
Older clans favour continued isolation; younger clans (especially Borgakh's) quietly explore Republic and Imperial contact. The isolationists fear cultural dilution; the integrationists fear strategic obsolescence. The Fire Peak Pilgrimage of recent years has become a forum for this debate.
Voidstone proximity
One or more Voidstones are believed hidden in the Corruption Wastes. Dark Elven interest in finding Voidstones has accelerated; if a search party approaches Rendrown territory the diplomatic question becomes immediate. The Blood Council has no consensus on how to respond.
Corruption Wastes expansion
The Wastes may be expanding slowly across centuries — some Rendrown geographers insist the front has moved measurably south since Year 8,500. The void-corrupted monster pressure on smaller holds has increased over the same period. Whether the two facts are connected is debated within the Blood Council.
